The mission was carried out for the implementation of the Dayton Agreement, guaranteeing the free movement to the population. On 15th December 1995 the Italian Government ordered the participation of a Contingent in the Implementation Force (IFOR), based on the "Garibaldi" Brigade. On 20th December 1996 IFOR is reorganized into a Stabilization Force (SFOR) in order to stabilize the effects of the Peace Plan, to prevent new tensions, to restore the minimum conditions of social coexistence and to favour the re-establishment of the civilian Institutions in the Country.
On 9th July 2004 the UN Resolution 1551 authorized the continuation of SFOR for other six months and approved the NATO decision to conclude SFOR before the end of 2004. Since December 2004 the EU started a mission in Bosnia that included a military component.
