At the end of 1988 the Italian Government approved the participation to the UN international initiative in the programme of helps to Afghanistan (UNOCA, United Nations Office for Coordinating Relief in Afghanistan, "Operation Salaam"), in order to clear the land of mines. On 30th March 1989 eight Engineer Officers were sent there to train instructors and staff. Italy participated in the activity from 30th March to 14th October 1989. The Italian mission ended on 15thOctober 1989. A second mission started on 1st May 1990 and ended on 14th October 1990 in the training camp of Quetta (Pakistan); it was composed by four Officers and two non-commissioned Officers of the Engineer Corp.
