According to the Resolution 1386 of the UN Security Council of the 20th December 2001, the "International Security Assistance Force" had to guarantee a safe environment, in support of the Afghan temporary Authority installed in Kabul on 22nd December 2001.
Started as Multinational Mission, since August 2003 the contingent is NATO-led.
Even if Italy continued to have the responsibilities in the area of the capital Kabul, it has taken on the responsibility in one of the five regional sectors, the Regional Command West, in which Afghanistan is divided.
