The Italian Army Team of the Niger mission carries out a course in favor of the Niger National Guard.

Training to combat the IED threat

​In recent days, at the Niamey training center, a course to increase the awareness of the threat of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in favor of the Niger National Guard was concluded. The ceremony for the presentation of certificates of merit, in the presence of the Commander of the Bilateral Support Mission in Niger (MISIN), Brigadier General Claudio Dei and Lieutenant Colonel Oumarou Garba, Director of the Statistics and Training Center of the National Guard of Niger, took place after a brief demonstration by the students, who carried out an exercise resulting from the teaching lessons.

The course, lasting two weeks, developed and deepened the technical-tactical procedures related to the recognition, composition and detection of the placement of improvised explosive devices, the cause of attacks against the Niger Security Forces by international fundamentalist terrorism. The teaching lessons included the chemical and physical characteristics of the explosives as well as the effects and classification of the explosions.

This activity is part of the process for the development of the Niger security forces (Armed Forces, National Gendarmerie, National Guard and Special Forces of the Republic of Niger) due to the increase in capacity with the aim of combating the phenomenon of illegal trafficking and threats to the security in which MISIN bases its mission.

From 15 September 2018, the starting date of the activity, the training team of the Italian Genius Specialist Army trained more than 400 soldiers of the Niger Defense and Security Forces with a teaching programme of 12 specialization courses in the field of Counter-IED.
