The first phase of the evaluation of the NRDC-ITA Command (Combat Readiness Evaluation – CREVAL) has concluded at the "Ugo Mara" Barracks in Solbiate Olona (VA), the headquarter of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps in Italy (NRDC-ITA). The evaluation of its operational capabilities represents an important moment to stress key strengths and margins of improvement of the procedures.
In fact NRDC-ITA is carrying out a Command Post Exercice (CPX) called "Brilliant Ledger 2017", structured on a complex and realistic scenario that reduplicates the most delicate aspects of modern crisis and conflicts. In view of the exercice, in this first phase, for a whole week, observers and valuators from other NATO Commands have examined the procedures and the capabilities of the NRDC-ITA personnel in order to evaluate the preparation level that the Command has reached.
It has been an essential activity in view of the next important certification phase of NRDC-ITA as Land Component Command (LCC), the land component of the new "enhanced" NATO Response Force (eNRF). It represents an "advanced" military instrument of reaction that permits the Alliance to promptly face any threats in the name of the "collective Defence" and briefly respond to crisis, through rapid intervention and deployable operational capabilities. NRDC-ITA is preparing to take on the LCC responsibility since 2018.
On the framework of the eNRF, NRDC-ITA will have the command and control of the land component of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), a key component for the eNRF. The VJTF has to ensure the first and immediate NATO response to possible threats, thanks to the capability of deploying all the military disposition between 5 and 15 days from the notification of the order. The VJTF is constituted by a group of multinational Forces characterized by high operational readiness, thanks to which the Alliance has strengthened the eNRF structure. This disposition is also supported by an air and a naval component as well as special forces.
