“Italian Army health structures for first aid in youth sport”

A training campaign on first aid, called "My life in your hands", is currently under way in Kosovo. It was born from the collaboration between the Regional Command West (RC-W) and the Department of Sport and Culture of the municipality of Peč / Pejë, where the Italian soldiers operate in the western multinational contingent in Kosovo.

The goal of the initiative is to instruct young athletes, belonging to different age groups and coming from various local sports associations, to take action in case of cardio-respiratory arrest and traumas of various nature, through the application of first aid procedures and CPR, aimed at restoring and maintaining vital functions.

The initiative involves the realization of a series of meetings in the various sports centers that have joined the project, involving around twenty sports associations and over 200 young athletes.

The course, according to a standard theoretical / practical protocol, includes the acquisition of "life-saving" procedures through the use of educational mannequins, was characterized by moments of confrontation between the athletes who attended the meetings and the military health personnel of the RC-W who conducted the activity.

An Italian-led multinational operating unit, based on the 24th “Peloritani” Regiment and framed within the NATO KFOR mission, used its health facilities in Kosovo. They were employed according to the principle of  “Dual Use”, not only in the conduct of normal operational activities, but also in support of local population and in this particular case, in favor of young athletes belonging to the different ethnic groups present in the western sector of Kosovo, joined by a single passion for sport.
