The Museum was founded in 1987, after a Ministerial Decree and with a governing measure by the General Staff of the Army, in order to revitalize culturally the city-fortress of Palmanova; in that way its history was linked to that of the Venetian, Austrian, French and Italian units followed one another for 400 years. After some interventions for the public practicability and for restoration of the fortified works, the museum is opened to the public since July 1990.
