The Historical Archive of the Italian Army General Staff is located in Rome, Via Lepanto 5, Barracks “Nazario Sauro”. Easily accessible with the local public transports (underground line A – stop “Lepanto”). The Office is provided with a study hall for researchers and scholars.
To access the Archive is compulsory to book a place by phone, calling the number +39 06/4735.8105.
Reservations are taken until the available places are exhausted, starting from the first working day of:
- December, to access in the next months of January and February;
- February, to access in March and April;
- April, to access in May and June;
- June, to access in July and September;
- September, to access in October, November and December.
Due to the many requests to access and the few available places, the reservations can be authorized up to 5 working days for each of the above periods from January to September, and 6 days for the quarter October to December.
Reservations can be only made for own account. Therefore it is not possible to book on behalf of third parties.
The scholars who are unable to attend in the booked days are required to communicate the cancellation by e-mail (
uff.storico@smerag.esercito.difesa.it) not later than 12.00 on the day before the date of access: failure to provide such notice will result in the exclusion from the next round of reservations.
Places vacated as result of cancellation will be allocated to those scholars that in the meantime shall submit an application.
Foreign citizens who want to access the Historical Archive must submit an application through the Military Attaché of the Diplomatic Mission of their Country in Italy, attaching a copy of a valid photo ID and indicating the topic of the research and the required period of the visit, in order to obtain the necessary authorization to enter the military infrastructure.
The study hall is open from 8.30am to 1.30pm, from Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am to 11.30am on Friday. It is closed in August. The entrance in the study room is allowed until 9.30am.
Access to the study room and document consultation are free of charge. Up to 3 boxes or volumes of bound documents per day can be requested.
According to the Italian Law regulating the State Archives, all the books and documents, even those considered classified, produced over 50 years ago can be accessible for consultation. Documentation containing people’s sensitive personal data is publicly available if it was produced over 70 years ago (Legislative Decree 42/2004 article 122).
According to the applicable legislation, the reproduction of historical documentation that does not contain confidential data, is free of charge, using your own devices, as long as it is carried out on a non-profit basis for studies and researches purposes.
The reproduction is allowed without physical contact with the documents and without exposure to light sources.
Publication and release of the reproduced documents are free of charge when:
- activities must be not-for-profit and performed in a way that no additional reproductions can be made for financial gain.
- notification of the published work must be sent via e-mailstatesercito@esercito.difesa.it
- A copy of the said work must be sent to the Historical Office (two paper copies of printed works; file or link of digital resources).
- The published or released documents shall indicate the precise archival reference number.
Reproductions and release for profit purposes must be authorized in advance by the Historical Office filling out the relevant form named C.
The Office does not store military personnel records of soldiers who have served in the Italian Armed Force (Army).
