After the outbreak of the 1st World War, the Italian
Army joined the fray on May 24,1915 crossing the Italian
border while advancing.
The most important battles took place in the area of
the river Isonzo till the day of the Battle at Caporetto;
the 6th battle in that area marked the first remarkable
success as it paved the way to the conquest of Gorizia
in the summer of 1916.
The 12th battle was the last abd marked the defeat at
Caporetto in October 1917.
The heroic blocking battles at the Piave and Grappa
rivers (Novembr 10 - December 4) closed the breach opened
at Caporetto and in 1918 the battles at the river Piave
(15 -24 june) and at Vittorio Veneto (October 24 - November
4) marked the final victory.
During the 1st World War, the Italian Army was also
engaged on fronts abroad, namely in France with the
II Army Corps which fought bravely at Bligny (July
15 -23) and at the Chemin del Dames (October 10 -12
1918).

In Albania and Macedonia, Italian
troops occupied Durres (December 29, 1915), Monastir
(November 18, 1916) and won the battle at Malakastra
(July 6 -9 , 1918).
The 1st World War, called "la grande guerra" can
be summarized by the following neutral statistical
data: 4.000.000 men mobilized, nearly 600.000
fallen and 1.500.000 disabled.
