| (Calabria,
Naples, January 26, 1994 - December 15, 1995)
0perations "Riace" and "Partenope" started on January
1994 , the latter being resumed on July 14, 1997.
The satisfying results obtained during operation "Vespri
Siciliani" led political authorities to start similar
operations in other critical Italian regions to control
the territory, thus giving Police Forces the possibility
to perform their specific investigation and judiciary
tasks.
Operation "Riace" was started in Calabria with the concurrent
employment of 1,350 men, incorporated inTO two Regiments,
in turn divided into 5 tactical groups to develop control
activities.

Operation "Partenope" was simultaneously carried out by
a Regiment manned with 500 men. So far, more than 16,000
men from all Italian Military Regions have taken part
in these missions, tasked both with garrisoning nearly
30 sensitive targets put under the responsibility of the
Army and with performing dynamic activities.
Dynamic activities carried out during operation "Riace",
together with the physical garrisoning of sensitive targets,
can be summed up as follows:
- 2.147 road blocks to check roads/cars;
- 332 patrolling activities;
- 57.935 vehicles inspected;
- 75.461 people identified;
- 2.408 buildings inspected;
- 4.237 people searched;
- 197 mopping up activities in non urban areas;
- 178 cordoning activities;
- 3 surprise checks on suspected persons.
This way, all established goals were
reached also in Calabria with a remarkable reduction
in petty crimes, which allowed police forces to perform
their specific tasks, thus re-building confidence between
the State and the population of those critical regions.
